This month Scotland Parent magazine also celebrates Summer in Scotland!

Out of Hibernation

Spring has finally sprung and along with all the new signs of life in the natural world, we're also feeling renewed and ready to enjoy our great outdoors once again.

And there's no shortage of options for families who have been feeling more than a little deprived of days out over the winter months.

Red SquirrelYou don't have to be David Attenborough - or travel on his budget - to get up close and personal with wildlife. Dumfries and Galloway, one of the most underrated family destinations in Scotland, is a giant playground with . The forests and lochs to beautiful sandy beaches. There are conservation centres, wildlife reserves and animal sanctuaries with a huge variety of animal, bird, sea and plant life for you to discover.

The island of Arran is always worth a visit, but May looks like being an especially good time to make the trip across the water. From May 14-21, the island is host to its own wildlife festival, which includes walks, talks and activities for all ages.  Visit www.arranwildlife.co.uk for information

If adventure sports is more your thing, we're well into the season for an adrenalin rush. Perthshire's outdoor playground is open for business, a range of exciting activities on offer on land, water and in the air.  Visit www.perthshire.co.uk for a full range of activities.

Highland Adventure Safaris, which is based in the Perthshire town of Aberfeldy, has specially-designed safaris for families.

Equip the kids with their own binoculars and spy sheets, and let them search the mountain forests for red squirrels, red deer and other exciting forest wildlife.

On every Saturday from now throughout the summer, the Nature Detectives programme offers children the chance to follow a list of clues and answer questions by exploring the wildlife garden, nature trail and lodge interpretation, to enter a prize draw. Entry is free,

For information on all of Highland Adventure Safari's activities, visit www.highlandadventuresafaris.co.uk or call 01887 820071 for details.

Look out for our summer issue June 1. Features include an interview with Gail Porter, travelling with kids, spotlight on the Isle of Arran, our pick of the best days out in Scotland, and our calendar packed full of fabulous things to do all summer.

Parenting on the Web!

If you use a fab parenting website with great parenting advice, information and a fun and friendly forum please tell us so we can tell more Mums and Dads about it!

We want to team up with the best parenting websites so their visitors can find out about us and you can find out about them!

To recommend your favourite parenting website please post on our forum!

Each month we'll feature one of the parenting websites on our newsletter too!  And to start the ball rolling we're featuring www.totz2teens.co.uk

Totz2teens is not just about the serious side of parenting.  We love having a natter about anything.  At the moment there is a thread about knitting but later this day we could be talking about shoes and handbags.  We run regular competitions for members too!

One totz2teens member says "I'm so glad I found totz2teens, the forum has made such a difference to me! I feel like I belong here and wonder how I managed without it! I have been through some difficult times myself and have found the support here to be wonderful and made me feel as if they truly sympathised with me.  I would also like to think that I have been able to help someone else in similar circumstances, even if it's just lending a friendly ear or shoulder to cry on or somewhere to let off steam."

We would very much like for you to be included in our community so why not pop along to www.totz2teens.co.uk

Under 5s Book Club
By Pat Saunders from Poppys Books

When two parenting books arrived in the post it seemed like an ideal time to turn my attention away from children's books for a while and review books that might help us as parents.

Seven Secrets of Successful Parenting: Or How to Achieve the Almost Impossible by Karen Doherty and Georgia Coleridge

Seven SecretsSeven Secrets is a very stylish and readable book. The authors both have 4 children and when they started asking those familiar questions "How do you stay calm? How do you handle bullying? How do you stop your children fighting?" they found that other parents' answers would depend on their personality and parenting style. Thus - the Seven Parent Types. Find out which one you are and then, my favourite part of the book, try the others and see if they work better for you.

Bantam Press £12.99 p/b

POPPYS BOOKS PRICE £8.99 + £1.50 P&P

Flying Start: Coaching your children for life by Emma Sargent

Flying StartEmma Sargent started to use her skills as a Life Coach and Trainer with her own children. In this book she shows parents how to deal more effectively with their children by using very simple techniques that are used in coaching. Emma promotes active listening, describes how to ask great questions and demonstrates how you can help your children reach their potential. There is so much more in this book than I have space to write; processes that can be used to build good relationships with your children and others in your life.

Mums in Business

This month Deirdre Armstrong from Scotland tells us her inspiring story...

Deidre ArmstrongI have always been an avid reader of self help books and tackled starting a family in the same way. I researched an approach called fertility awareness, which helped me to get pregnant within 2 months of trying at the age of 35. To my surprise it was twins and 9 months later when my boys arrived I had my hands full.

I went back to work as an NHS manager a year later but a battle with post natal depression and a long commute to work quickly made me realise that the work-life balance was definitely not working for me. In the meantime, I had been informally coaching friends who had been trying unsuccessfully to conceive - with my help, one by one they started to get pregnant. Several of them joked with me that I should start charging for my services and gradually I began to agree. I had always wanted to start my own business and this was certainly something I felt passionately about.

Deidre Armstrong babiesSo I gave up my job and re-trained as a "conception coach", as I now call myself. I started the first private fertility awareness clinic in Edinburgh 18 months ago and since then have helped 25 couples get pregnant, many of whom had been trying for years. My new career fits in wonderfully with my young twins, as I can see clients when they are at nursery or in bed in the evening. My stress levels have improved dramatically and the job satisfaction when I get sent a photo of a client's much wanted new baby is enormous.

For more information about Deirdre's clinic go to www.how2getpregnant.co.uk

The website, put together by two mums, is also full of useful information on kit, snacks, gadgets and book reviews.
